Getting to Know the 20 Obligatory Attributes of Allah SWT: Meanings, Proofs, and Wisdom
As a foundation of faith, Muslims need to understand the 20 obligatory attributes of Allah SWT, which are divided into four groups: Nafsiyah (Existence), Salbiyah (Eternity without beginning, Eternity without end, Dissimilarity to creation, Self-subsistence, Oneness), Ma'ani (Power, Will, Knowledge, Life, Hearing, Sight, Speech), and Ma'nawiyah (Being All-Powerful, All-Willing, All-Knowing, Ever-Living, All-Hearing, All-Seeing, All-Speaking). These attributes affirm Allah's oneness, power, and perfection.
The Quran confirms these attributes, like in Surah Ibrahim verse 32 about Existence, Al-Hadid verse 3 about Qidam and Baqa, Asy-Syura verse 11 about Mukhalafatu Lil Hawadisi, and Fatir verse 15 about Qiyamuhu Binafsihi. These verses are proofs that strengthen belief.
Understanding the obligatory attributes of Allah brings wisdom in daily life, such as nurturing fear and hope only in Him, making us aware of the limitations of human intellect, and encouraging praiseworthy behavior because we feel constantly watched by Allah, the All-Seeing and All-Hearing.
