Former Aceh Governor Zaini Abdullah Dies at Age 86
BANDA ACEH – Former Aceh Governor for the 2012–2017 term, Dr. Zaini Abdullah, passed away on Saturday (13/6/2026) at 12:40 PM local time at the dr Zainoel Abidin Regional General Hospital (RSUZA) in Banda Aceh. The man affectionately called Abu Doto died at the age of 86.
His body will be washed at RSUZA, then taken to the family home in Geuceu, Banda Aceh. After Asr prayer, the funeral prayer will be held at Baiturrahman Grand Mosque, and he will be buried in Trubue, Pidie Regency.
Zaini Abdullah was born in Pidie on April 24, 1940. He was a specialist obstetrician who once worked in Aceh and Sweden. He was a senior figure involved in Aceh peace negotiations and helped sign the 2005 Helsinki Memorandum of Understanding.
After the peace deal, he was elected Governor of Aceh in 2012 alongside Muzakir Manaf. While in office, he focused on peace implementation, Aceh's special status, and post-conflict development. The late governor is remembered as a humble person close to the people, especially in education, health, and peace.
