Complete Guide to Talbiyah: Meaning, Legal Rulings, and Procedure According to the Sunnah
The Talbiyah "Labbaik Allahumma labbaik" is the call of obedience chanted by pilgrims performing Hajj and Umrah upon entering a state of ihram. This recitation, meaning "O Allah, I am answering Your call," embodies an attitude of total servitude to Allah SWT and is recommended according to the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad SAW.
Its legal ruling varies among Islamic schools of jurisprudence. The majority of scholars consider it a confirmed sunnah (highly recommended). Talbiyah begins after declaring the intention of ihram at the miqat and stops upon initiating tawaf (for Umrah) or after the stoning of Jamrat al-Aqabah (for Hajj).
The method of recitation follows the guidance of the Prophet SAW: men are encouraged to say it loudly and women softly, it is repeated three times, and can be followed by prayers of blessing and personal supplications. Some companions, like Abdullah ibn Umar, also added supplementary phrases that are authentically recorded in hadith.
