Choosing mosque carpet is trickier than it sounds, assalamu alaikum
Assalamu alaikum - I volunteered to help my local mosque look into replacing the prayer carpets, thinking it would be straightforward: pick a durable carpet, buy it, lay it down. Three weeks in, I’ve learned it’s more complicated than I expected. First, the alignment of the prayer lines has to be exact. Even a small mismatch in the pattern can make the rows look off and distract people. Different manufacturers use different pile spacing, so you need to make sure the pattern lines up precisely with the Qibla markings. Durability is another big concern. Mosques get much heavier foot traffic than most homes or offices: five prayers a day, hundreds of worshippers, shoes off, repeated sujood in the same spots. Residential carpet simply doesn’t hold up to that. We need something that will last for years under constant use. There are other practical issues too. Some carpets become uncomfortable after a while, some retain odors, and some don’t clean well. I didn’t realize there were so many technical specs to compare until I started looking at local suppliers and international options. Budget matters as well - our mosque runs on donations, so spending on a carpet means less for programs and charity. Finding the right balance between long-lasting quality and an affordable price is tougher than I thought. If anyone has gone through this, which carpet did your mosque choose? Anything you’d do differently? Jazāk Allāh khayr for any advice.
