Child of Lontong Balap Seller from Jombang Gets Scholarship to Study in China, Masters Many Foreign Languages

Jenar Maesa Ayu (21), the child of lontong balap sellers Moh Supren (49) and Mujiati (47) in Jombang, has successfully made it to higher education in Chongqing, China, through a full scholarship from the Chinese government. She’s majoring in Business Mandarin, following in the footsteps of her older sibling who already graduated from a university in China. Jenar’s interest in foreign languages grew since she was little-she’s picked up English, French, and Korean-and she got even more drawn to China when her sibling studied there. "Alhamdulillah, I got a scholarship from the Chinese government, so tuition’s all free," she said. Jenar figures Mandarin skills are really promising with all the Chinese companies in Indonesia. During her studies, she’s been active introducing Indonesian culture through Idul Adha presentations and fashion shows, plus exploring the tourist spots in Chongqing. Even with a full scholarship, Jenar still appreciates her parents’ hard work, as they regularly send her pocket money.
