Check your cheese, dear brothers and sisters 🧀 As-salamu Alaykum
As-salamu Alaykum. I wanted to share a quick reminder for those who eat Zabiha halal about things to watch for when buying cheese. I pulled some info from online sources since I’m not an expert, so forgive any gaps. Animal rennet: Many cheeses are made with rennet, an enzyme from the stomachs of animals like cows or sheep. If that rennet comes from animals not slaughtered Islamically, the cheese won’t be Zabiha. I’ve noticed this a lot in some American-style processed cheeses. I even contacted one company and their reply suggested their product wasn’t halal. If possible, choose cheeses labeled “microbial,” “vegetable,” or “non-animal rennet.” Halal certification is ideal, insha’Allah. Alcohol in processing: Some specialty cheeses (for example certain blue cheeses or washed-rind types) are aged or washed in wine or beer, so check labels or ask the producer. Cross-contamination: There’s also a risk of cross-contamination if cheese is made or packaged on the same equipment as pork products, such as in mixed facilities or some deli counters. Be cautious. Animal-derived additives: Some cheeses use additives like lipase or flavorings that can come from pigs or other non-halal sources. Watch for vague ingredient terms such as “enzymes” (without specification), “animal lipase,” or “rennet (animal source).” In short: look for halal certification, non-animal rennet wording, or ask the manufacturer if you’re unsure. May Allah make it easy for us to eat what is pure. JazakAllahu khairan for reading.
