Can I join Ramadan fasting?

As-salamu alaykum everyone. I'm not Muslim myself, but I had a close friend who was. They often shared how meaningful Ramadan was for their family. Sadly, they passed away last year. Would it be okay for me to fast during Ramadan in their memory, as a way to honor their faith and culture? Any advice would be appreciated.
