As a non-Muslim, I want Islamophobes to read this

Assalamu alaikum - I hope you don't mind me posting this. I've been quietly following Muslim conversations online for a while, not to spy but to learn more about Islam and see how people talk about their faith without bothering friends. I'm Jewish and I live in Europe. I have no ties to the actions of any government, and I am deeply ashamed of what's happened in Gaza. I'm also worried about the wider consequences. Lately it feels like some people are using that situation to justify being openly Islamophobic. It's happening online, sure, but also face-to-face. I live in a mostly Muslim neighborhood and work in the city, so a lot of people meet me and realize I am Jewish - often for the first time. Because of the stupid stereotype that Jews and Muslims are always enemies, some folks assume I should be pleased by anti-Muslim comments. I've had people mutter things like “you'll know what I mean…” and then say something nasty about Muslims. My personal experience with Muslims has been overwhelmingly positive (aside from a couple of rude encounters when going to synagogue - every community has its idiots). What worries me is how quickly attitudes have shifted. I really hope it's just ignorance. When I read discussions among Muslims here, I see sincere, spiritual people trying their best. Today someone made an ignorant remark about Islam and I told them to come read Muslim conversations for themselves. My hope was they'd expect confirmation of their prejudice and instead meet thoughtful, kind people discussing faith and life, and maybe that would change their mind. Sorry for the long message. I just wanted to say I'm sorry you have to deal with these lies and hate. It takes real strength to respond the way so many of you do. Jazakum Allah khair for this space and for showing the true character of Muslims.
