AKBP Basuki Gets Heavier Sentence Than Prosecutors Demanded, Dodging Cameras Becomes a Highlight
AKBP Basuki was sentenced to six years in prison by the Semarang District Court on Wednesday, May 20, 2026. This verdict is heavier than the prosecutors' demand of five years. The panel of judges declared Basuki guilty of negligence that caused the death of a female lecturer from Untag Semarang, D (35), who was found dead in a hotel in November 2025. The judge stated that Basuki violated Article 474 paragraph 3 of Law No. 1 of 2023 on the National Criminal Code concerning negligence resulting in death.
After the hearing, Basuki, wearing a white shirt and an orange detainee vest, drew attention for trying to avoid the media. In a circulating video, he was seen running toward the detention vehicle, and his handcuffs even came loose at one point. The victim's family lawyer, Zainal Abidin Petir, posted the moment on social media, showing Basuki briefly entering the court's holding cell before dashing to the detention vehicle.
