A Saudi Scholar Explains the Concept of Tyrannical Leaders and Salvation in the Hereafter

A Saudi scholar, Sheikh Assim al-Hakeem, responded to a question from an Indonesian about whether it's possible to pass on sins to a tyrannical leader. In a YouTube video, he made it clear that Islam does allow this, as long as the leader isn't disobeying Allah SWT and the people still stick together. Sheikh al-Hakeem stressed how important it is to obey leaders to avoid chaos, but if a leader is acting unfairly-like with corruption or dictatorship-the people can shift the sins onto that leader. His statement went viral on Indonesian social media, with lots of netizens linking it to the corruption issues back home. Citing the 2025 Corruption Perception Index data, Indonesia scored 34 out of 100, down from the previous year. Among ASEAN countries, Indonesia sits in fifth place.
