9 Forbidden Marriages in Islam and Their Evidences
Islam encourages marriage to build a family that’s sakinah, mawaddah, and rahmah, but not all forms of marriage are allowed. The prohibition is in the Qur'an, Surah An-Nisa verse 23, which forbids marrying a mahram due to blood ties, breastfeeding, or marriage.
Some forbidden marriages are: marrying a mahram, interfaith marriage (a Muslim woman with a non-Muslim man, or a Muslim man with a polytheist woman), mut'ah marriage (temporary contract), syighar marriage (no dowry and swapping), tahlil marriage (to make her lawful after three divorces), marrying a woman in her iddah period, marrying two sisters at once, marrying a married woman, and marrying while in ihram.
These prohibitions are also backed by hadith, like the Prophet’s saying: "What is forbidden due to breastfeeding is like what is forbidden due to lineage" (Bukhari and Muslim), and the prohibition of mut'ah marriage at the time of Khaibar (Bukhari and Muslim).
Understanding these rules is important for every Muslim so they don’t fall into a relationship that’s haram according to the Sharia.
