57 Years Since the Al-Aqsa Mosque Burning, Friday Sermons on Palestine Echo Across Indonesia
The 57th anniversary of the Al-Aqsa Mosque burning tragedy was marked with calls for action and Friday sermons centered on Palestine. The Aqsa Working Group (AWG) held a National Friday Action on August 21, 2026, coinciding with the August 21, 1969 tragedy and the organization's 18th anniversary. The action was centered in front of the US Embassy in Jakarta at 4:00 PM WIB, as well as simultaneously in various regions.
AWG Presidium Chairman Muhammad Anshorullah stated that this call isn't just about remembering history, but about keeping public awareness alive regarding the ongoing threats to that holy compound. Preachers were urged to raise the issue of Al-Aqsa and Palestine in their sermons as a form of education and communal responsibility.
Anshorullah emphasized that the 1969 tragedy is a historical wound, but the threat to the status quo of Al-Aqsa hasn't ended. AWG invites the public and religious figures to keep fighting for the freedom of Al-Aqsa and the independence of Palestine through collective movement. "As long as Al-Aqsa is still occupied, our struggle is not finished," he said.
