Mbah Wahab Awarded the Title of Father of ISHARI

Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) founder KH Abdul Wahab Chasbullah, or Mbah Wahab, has been given the title ‘Father of ISHARI Nahdlatul Ulama’ by the Central Board of the Indonesian Hadrah Arts Association (PP ISHARI). The award honors his role in pioneering and fighting for hadrah art to become part of NU’s journey. The ceremony took place during the Istighosah and Joint Prayer for the Success of NU’s 35th Congress at the Bahrul Ulum Islamic Boarding School in Tambakberas, Jombang. The award was handed to Mbah Wahab’s son, KH Hasib Wahab Chasbullah, who represented the extended family. Gus Hasib expressed his thanks and hoped this award would bring blessings and progress to ISHARI. History notes that Mbah Wahab initiated the formation of ISHARI on January 23, 1959, as an official platform for hadrah art under NU’s umbrella. He also pushed for ISHARI’s inclusion in NU’s structure, which later officially became an Autonomous Body at the 34th NU Congress in Lampung in 2021.
