57 Years After the Al-Aqsa Tragedy, the OIC's Mandate is Now Being Questioned Again
Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian People's Consultative Assembly (MPR RI) Hidayat Nur Wahid (HNW) reminded that the tragedy of the Al-Aqsa Mosque arson on August 21, 1969, was the momentum behind the birth of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). He reckons World Mosque Day should revive the OIC's mandate to protect and liberate the Al-Aqsa Mosque.
HNW highlighted the latest threats to Al-Aqsa, including permits for Jewish religious rituals in the compound and restrictions on Muslim worship. He stressed that these actions go against international agreements stating Al-Aqsa is a Muslim heritage site.
According to UN archives, the response to the Al-Aqsa burning pushed Islamic countries to consolidate until the OIC was officially formed on September 25, 1969, in Rabat, Morocco. HNW urged the Indonesian government, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to more actively fight for Al-Aqsa's protection and encourage unity among Islamic nations via the OIC.
