10 Suspects Named in Riotous Demo in Front of Grahadi Surabaya
Cops have named 10 people as suspects after a protest turned into a riot in front of the Grahadi building in Surabaya on Friday (26/6). Out of those, four were involved in anarchist acts and six others tested positive for drugs. Surabaya Police Chief Commissioner Luthfie Sulistiawan said that out of 24 people who were detained, 14 were released because no criminal elements were found against them.
Police see the action not as a democratic expression of aspirations, but as vandalism. The timing at 4:30 a.m., the use of face coverings, and calls like "let's play ball on the highway" are considered modes of provocation. The chaos was triggered by Molotov cocktails, rock throwing, and vehicles deliberately revving their exhausts.
The four suspects for general crimes-MA, ARF, NB, and DSD-were allegedly egged on by calls from the social media account Bara Api. They aren't students but private workers and laborers, and they claimed they didn't know the purpose of the demo. The six drug suspects are currently undergoing assessment with the Surabaya City National Narcotics Agency.
The commissioner urged residents not to be easily swayed by irrational calls on social media. Police are ready to facilitate aspirations that are conveyed properly with clear goals. Currently, data analysis on the seized phones is still underway to uncover possible actors behind the action.
