10 Recommended Acts in the Month of Muharram and Their Virtues
The month of Muharram is one of the four months honored by Allah SWT, so Muslims are encouraged to increase their good deeds. Here are 10 sunnah acts: fasting on Ashura (10th of Muharram), fasting on Tasu'a (9th of Muharram), other sunnah fasts (Mondays-Thursdays, Ayyamul Bidh, Dawud fasting), dhikr and seeking forgiveness, supplication, reading the Qur'an with tartil, sunnah prayers (tahajud, witr, repentance, duha, rawatib), giving charity and maintaining family ties, increasing good deeds, and sincere repentance.
The main act is the Ashura fast which can expiate the sins of the past year (HR Muslim), and fasting in the month of Muharram is said to be the most virtuous fast after Ramadan (HR Muslim). The day of Ashura marks the historical victory of Prophet Musa AS over Pharaoh, and Prophet Muhammad SAW himself commanded fasting on that day. The virtues of the month of Muharram include being a sacred month, the month of Allah, and a moment to improve oneself at the beginning of the Hijri year.
