Wondering about 'cultural Muslim' identity

Assalamu alaikum, folks. I've been thinking about something and wanted to share my thoughts, since I'm still learning about Islam. As a Christian American guy who reverted recently, I've noticed some public figures who say they're Muslim but dress however they like and support more liberal views on social issues. It makes me curious-could there be a kind of cultural Islam, similar to how some Jewish people are culturally Jewish but not very practicing? Just something on my mind.
