Thoughts on the Afterlife

Salaam! I've been thinking a lot about Islam and what happens after death. To me, Islam and Buddhism seem like the most practical religions, but I still struggle with the idea that our deeds could lead to forever in hell suffering or forever in heaven with no pain or tests. It just doesn't click for me, and I'd love if a Muslim could help explain this and maybe guide me towards embracing Islam.
