Why ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (RA) Moves Me Most
Assalamualaikum - Picture someone who once strongly opposed Islam. Now picture that same person turning completely around and becoming one of its firmest supporters. That’s ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (RA). - Transformation: He went from fierce opposition to becoming the second Caliph, a model of justice and courage. His story shows that no soul is beyond Allah’s guidance. - Justice-first: As Caliph he used to patrol the streets at night to check on the needy, and he held himself to account before judging others. His rule was merciful but firm. - In tune with revelation: A few companions had matters where their view was directly confirmed by revelation. ʿUmar (RA) suggested that the Prophet’s wives be given modest covering, and the guidance came in Surah al-Aḥzāb (33:59). He recommended praying near Maqām Ibrāhīm, and Allah mentioned it in Surah al-Baqarah (2:125). His judgment often matched what Allah revealed. - On intoxicants he sought clarity - and the prohibition came (5:90). - Regarding hypocrites, he advised caution in praying for them - and guidance followed (9:84). A reminder for us: starting from a difficult or mistaken past doesn’t mean you’re stuck there. ʿUmar (RA) once intended harm toward the Prophet ﷺ, yet he embraced Islam and became one of its strongest guardians. Which companion inspires you the most, and why? Salaam.
