Weak Rupiah Triggers Umrah Cost Hike up to Rp6.5 Million per Pilgrim
Saudi Arabia has officially opened the Umrah season 1448 AH, with visa issuance starting on May 31 and pilgrim arrivals from June 1, 2026. But the rupiah’s slide against the US dollar has sent Umrah package costs skyrocketing. Standard 9–12 day packages that used to cost around Rp30–33 million have now jumped to Rp35–38 million, and mid-range packages are even hitting over Rp40 million.
The biggest spike is in flight tickets, up by Rp5–6.5 million due to global jet fuel prices and exchange rate pressure. An Umrah tour operator in Surabaya revealed that many aspiring pilgrims from villages, who’ve been saving up for years, are shocked and saddened by the sudden extra costs they have to cover.
Most pilgrims come from lower-middle-class backgrounds. Some travel agencies have reported cancellations or requests to extend installment plans. Organizers are forced to raise prices to offset the gap from the exchange rate and fuel costs. A few agencies are offering solutions like budget packages, interest-free installments, or room-sharing programs.
If you’re planning to go for Umrah, it’s recommended to choose officially licensed travel agencies to avoid scams. The Umrah season 1448 AH runs until April 2027.
