Vicar of Jerusalem Condemns Attack on Nun in East Jerusalem
The Vicar General of the Latin Patriarchate in Jerusalem described an extremist Israeli's attack on a French nun as an extremely serious and condemnable act. The incident occurred on Wednesday (29/4/2026), with the 36-year-old perpetrator already arrested on suspicion of committing a racially motivated assault, according to local police.
Bishop William Shomali stated he had watched video footage of the event, describing it as painful and concerning. The nun was pushed from behind, causing her to fall and hit her head on a stone, then the attacker returned to step on her before finally being stopped by a passerby. Shomali emphasized that the way the victim fell could have been fatal, adding weight to the gravity of the crime.
Shomali appreciated the police's quick response in this arrest, highlighting the importance of the formal report filed by the victim. He also stressed the need for re-education against racist beliefs and that the perpetrator will be tried under Israeli law, with police already classifying this incident as a racial attack.
