US Researchers Detail Rising Discrimination Against Religious and Caste Minorities in India
During a hearing at the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), researcher Raqib Hameed Naik revealed allegations of increasing violations against Muslims, Christians, and marginalized caste groups in India. He stated that the Indian government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi is allowing a climate of hatred through policies and political rhetoric, and requested Global Magnitsky sanctions against BJP figures and Hindu nationalist organizations like the RSS.
Naik specifically highlighted controversial statements from Yogi Adityanath and Himanta Biswa Sarma deemed anti-Muslim, as well as forced eviction operations in Assam affecting Muslim communities. The presented data shows a 97% increase in hate speech incidents against Muslims and Christians by 2025, and a 555% rise in cases of violence against Christians since 2014. Social media platforms are cited as a means for spreading anti-minority propaganda.
The researcher also criticized the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) for their potential impact on the political rights of Indian Muslims. He asked the US to designate India as a 'Country of Particular Concern' and to investigate heavy machinery companies whose equipment was used in demolishing minority settlements. The Indian government has denied allegations of systematic discrimination and stated its policies are in accordance with national law.
