UNESCO: 2.4 Million Afghan Girls Banned from School

UNESCO says 2.4 million Afghan girls have had no access to secondary education during five years of the new government. Afghanistan is the only country that officially bans women from secondary and higher education. Women have also been barred from university since 2022 and face restrictions on work and public participation. According to UNESCO, these restrictions could shrink the female workforce and wipe out around 9.6 billion US dollars in household income. Prolonged educational exclusion also raises the risk of early marriage. More than two million school-age children are out of school for other reasons, and the literacy rate is only 37 percent, with over 90 percent of 10-year-olds unable to read a simple text.
