Understanding the Three Steps of the Gaza Ceasefire Agreement, Insha'Allah
As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. On Monday, a significant 20-point peace agreement for Gaza was acknowledged by global leaders gathered in Egypt's Sharm El Sheikh, with the support of US President Donald Trump. This plan unfolds in three important stages, insha'Allah.
The first stage began with a ceasefire that took effect last Friday in Gaza. On Monday, progress continued with the release of 20 living hostages held by Hamas, as well as nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners detained in Israeli jails.
Humanitarian aid started reaching Gaza, where many suffer from severe hunger and famine, causing numerous deaths. Later Monday, Hamas was expected to hand over the remains of 28 hostages who died in captivity. This exchange would mark the end of the first phase, which seems to be the least challenging of the three.
Here's a simple overview of the three phases:
1. Immediate stop to all fighting, freezing front lines, and the release of all Israeli hostages, alive or deceased, within 72 hours.
2. Release of nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners held in Israel, including those with life sentences and those detained since the conflict began two years ago.
3. Humanitarian aid flowing into Gaza daily, with hundreds of truckloads of supplies entering the area.
Next steps include talks about Hamas disarming, Israel fully withdrawing from Gaza, and efforts to de-radicalize the region, which has been under Hamas leadership since 2007. This phase also offers Hamas leaders safe passage and amnesty for exile.
An international peacekeeping force, including members from the US, Arab countries, and Europe, would help maintain security. Egypt and Jordan would train a Palestinian police force, and a council of independent Palestinian experts would manage daily affairs under international supervision.
Rebuilding Gaza would start with Arab and global funding, overseen by a Board of Peace chaired by President Trump and including former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, insha'Allah.
May Allah bring peace and relief to the people of Gaza and protect all those affected. Ameen.
