Understanding the Concept of Istidraj in Islam
Istidraj in Islam refers to the bestowing of worldly pleasures-such as wealth, health, or power-upon someone who continues to sin, which is actually a form of gradual punishment from Allah SWT. This concept is explained in the Qur'an, including in Surah Al-A'raf Verse 182, which mentions that those who deny the verses of Allah will be left to gradually head towards destruction without them realizing it.
Signs of istidraj include a decline in worship while worldly pleasures increase, success despite ongoing sin, and a life that feels peaceful despite being far from worship. This needs to be understood so that Muslims can distinguish between blessings that are a gift from Allah and those that are a form of delayed punishment.
Other evidence about istidraj is found in several verses, such as Surah Al-Qalam Verses 44-45 and Surah Al-An'am Verse 44, which emphasize that Allah may open the door of enjoyment for those who are heedless, only to later inflict punishment suddenly. Prophet Muhammad SAW also warned in a hadith that if someone is given worldly pleasures while they persist in sinning, that is istidraj.
