UMY Expert: Fortify the Generation from Violence through Islamic Sex Education from an Early Age
Professor Akif Khilmiyah from Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) emphasizes the importance of building sexuality literacy from an early age through an Islamic values approach as a preventive measure against sexual violence. He says that sex education is still often seen as taboo, even though a lack of understanding actually makes someone vulnerable to violence.
According to him, sexuality literacy from an Islamic perspective doesn't just cover biological knowledge, but also instills moral values, responsibility, a sense of shame, and respect for human dignity. This education needs to be given gradually, from the family up to university level, so that children and teenagers can protect themselves from grooming practices or psychological manipulation.
Prof. Akif explained that in Islamic psychology, sexuality literacy aims to build self-control through a balance of reason, desire, and heart. Strengthening Islamic character based on trustworthiness, ihsan, and awareness of God's supervision is key to staying away from harmful behavior.
"When education, character, and spiritual values go hand in hand, that's the strongest fortress to prevent sexual violence, so that a person neither becomes a victim nor a perpetrator," he said. He hopes this approach will give rise to a generation of character that upholds honor and creates a safe environment.
