The Ruling on Marrying a Milk Sibling in Islam

Islam encourages marriage, but it sets clear boundaries. Marrying a milk sibling is forbidden because that relationship makes them mahram, as explained in the Quran, Surah An-Nisa verse 23. Milk siblings are children who were breastfed by the same woman, even if she’s not their biological mother. They have mahram status like blood siblings, but without inheritance rights or the obligation to provide for each other. This prohibition is reinforced by the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) saying that puts the forbidden nature of milk relationships on par with blood ties. The conditions for establishing milk siblinghood, according to the majority of scholars, include: it must be pure breast milk, the feeding has to happen at least five times until the child is full, and it must occur before the child turns two years old.
