The Ruling on Changing One's Name in Islam after Adulthood

In Islam, changing one's name after reaching adulthood is mubah (permissible), and it can even become wajib (obligatory) or sunnah depending on the situation. Changing the name becomes obligatory if the old name contains shirk (polytheism), like Abdul Al-Masih or Abdul Ka'bah. It is sunnah if the old name has a bad meaning or negative connotation. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) changed the names of companions whose names were not good, such as Barrah to Zainab, Ashiyah to Jamilah, and Hazn to Sahl. This shows the encouragement to have a good name and not one that triggers self-admiration or has a bad meaning. As for the habit of changing names because of frequent illness with the excuse that the name is 'too heavy', there is no basis in the Sharia.
