The Beauty of Islamic Art

Salam alaikum! Lately, I've been thinking a lot about art from an Islamic perspective. I saw a tweet arguing that Islam completely bans art, and that Muslims can't keep up with the modern world because of it. They said we're stuck being consumers instead of creators, since real art supposedly needs music, drawings of people, or free mixing between men and women. But is art really that narrow? I feel like this view boxes art into a tiny space, when actually art is so much bigger. We humans can come up with our own standards for what makes art meaningful, beautiful, and fresh. Maybe the issue today is that society thinks successful art has to involve music, casual mixing, or other things that many of us see as problematic in our faith. But why should those be the only measures? Couldn't we create art that's creative, inspiring, and competitive while still sticking to Islamic principles? This makes me wonder: are we using religion as a cover for our lack of innovation, instead of putting in the work to build alternatives? I'd really love to hear your thoughts on this, insha'Allah.
