The 13-Year Polemic Over the Rejection of Church Construction in Karangpilang Surabaya Ends Peacefully

The Surabaya City Council's Commission A successfully mediated the resolution of a 13-year polemic over residents' rejection of the construction of St. Yusup Church in Karangpilang. In a hearing involving residents, the church, and relevant agencies, a peaceful agreement was reached to continue the construction. Commission A Chairman Yona Bagus Widyatmoko stated that all parties had set aside their egos and reached a consensus. The dispute stemmed from confusion among residents of RT 1 RW 1 regarding the location of the building permit, which administratively was in Kebraon Village but overlapped with Karangpilang. The main church building will be constructed on land in the Kebraon area, while the back land covering 1,474 square meters in Karangpilang will be used as a parking area. The mediation agreement includes providing MSME tents for residents as well as cooperation on parking management, cleaning staff, and security between residents and the church.
