Tensions in Tanzania amid presidential elections - peace to you.
As-salamu alaykum. On Wednesday, amid the presidential elections in Tanzania, there were disturbances. The authorities deployed military units in several cities, including the capital Dodoma, to maintain security, according to international reports.
Besides Dodoma, where the current president Samia Suluhu Hassan resides, heightened security measures were also implemented on the island of Zanzibar. In the country's largest city, Dar es Salaam, a curfew has been declared starting from 6 PM local time (which coincides with Moscow time), and the internet has been shut down. Schools and government offices are temporarily closed across the country.
Opposition supporters consider the elections unfair. The protests are organized by the "Party for Democracy and Progress," and its leader, Tundu Lissu, was arrested in April on charges of treason-he had previously called for reform of the electoral system. A candidate from another opposition group, the "Alliance for Change and Transparency," Luhaga Mpina, was also barred from participating.
Still, there are 16 opposition candidates registered, who reportedly don’t have widespread support.
Preliminary voting results are expected on Thursday, and the electoral commission has a week to announce the official results.
Just a reminder: the president in Tanzania is elected for a five-year term. In 2021, Samia Suluhu Hassan, who previously served as vice president, took office after the death of the previous president John Magufuli-she became the first female president in the country.
I pray that the situation resolves peacefully and that innocent people stay safe. May Allah grant peace and justice to all those affected.
