Tambakberas to Host the 35th NU Congress, Returning to a Historic Pesantren in the Archipelago
The Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) has named Pondok Pesantren Bahrul Ulum Tambakberas, Jombang, East Java, as the host of the 35th NU Congress on 27–31 August 2026. The decision was ratified during the Joint Daily Meeting of the Syuriyah and Tanfidziyah of PBNU in Jakarta on Tuesday (7/7), after surveys at nine pesantren across five provinces.
The congress’s OC chairman Saifullah Yusuf (Gus Ipul) said the choice took into account technical readiness and Jombang’s experience as host of the 33rd Congress in 2015. Gus Ipul called on all NU elements to make the event a success with togetherness for the good of the jam’iyyah.
Pesantren Tambakberas, established in 1825, holds historical significance as the place where KH Abdul Wahab Chasbullah, one of NU’s founders and its second Rais Aam, grew up. This choice marks the congress’s return to Jombang after 11 years, where in 2015 the Ahlul Halli wal Aqdi mechanism was applied.
PBNU Rais Aam KH Miftachul Akhyar hopes the board will conclude its term of service well. The congress will be attended by thousands of participants from all over Indonesia to determine the direction of NU’s policies and leadership for the next five years.
