[Story] Taking a Week Away from Social Media - my experience, as-salāmu ʿalaykum
As-salāmu ʿalaykum, I want to share what happened when I gave up social media for one week. This summer I chose to try it because I had exams coming up and scrolling was stealing hours I needed for studying. Before I logged off I read all my messages and answered everything since I figured it might be the last time I was reachable for a bit. The first day felt a little odd, but I didn't have a strong urge to grab my phone - maybe because I was buried in revision. The second day was okay, but then there were a couple of days where time felt weird: each 24 hours stretched out and felt so long, like the feeling of fasting when every minute is noticeable. After that I started to get used to it and gradually became someone who didn't obsess over what others were doing or waiting on messages. By day seven something surprising happened: I really didn't feel the desire to check my phone or refresh any feeds. I actually wanted to keep going, not undo the progress by going back to that distracting device. In the end I returned to my phone because I needed it for studying and reading, not to fall back into endless scrolling. What I learned is that we are stronger than the pull of social media, and the gains from cutting down that time can be significant. We can choose to limit our use or reshape it - at least that's how it worked for me. Any thoughts or tips from anyone who tried something similar?
