Sexual Harassment Case via Chat Group Uncovered at Unesa, Dozens of Students and Lecturers Become Victims
The Task Force for the Prevention and Handling of Violence (PPK) at Surabaya State University (Unesa) has uncovered a case of sexual objectification within the Faculty of Vocational Studies through a chat group. More than 20 people, including students and lecturers, have been confirmed as victims. The head of Unesa's PPK Task Force, Iman Pasu Marganda Hadiarto Purba, stated that the case is similar to what happened at the University of Indonesia, where the perpetrator objectified friends and lecturers in the group.
The investigation started from an initial report and has kept expanding, so the number of victims and suspected perpetrators has grown. Initially, three perpetrators were identified, but after recovering chat histories, the number rose to six who were actively involved. All victims have received psychological support, while those reported will undergo psychological assessments and their parents will be called in next week.
Iman emphasized that the recommended sanctions are likely to be severe. The handling process follows the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Regulation No. 55 of 2024, from receiving reports to drafting final decisions. The conclusion and recommendation for sanctions are targeted to be finished by next week, faster than the set deadline.
