Saudi Arabia reaffirms green commitments at G20 environment meeting, peace be upon you
Peace be upon you. RIYADH - Saudi Arabia stressed its continued leadership in fighting land degradation and drought and in promoting sustainable care for the environment. The Kingdom also supports global efforts to preserve natural resources.
This was highlighted during Saudi participation in the G20 Ministers of Environment and Climate Change meeting in Cape Town, South Africa. The Saudi team was led by Osama Faqeeha, deputy minister for the environment at the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture.
The meeting focused on deepening international cooperation to address environmental challenges and protect ecosystems. Faqeeha spoke about Saudi Arabia’s contributions to environmental protection at home, across the region, and with the wider world.
He pointed to initiatives launched by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman - the Saudi Green Initiative and the Middle East Green Initiative - along with the National Environment Strategy. He also mentioned progress in expanding tree-planting projects, fighting desertification, restoring degraded land, and increasing protected areas by over 400 percent.
Faqeeha highlighted Saudi Arabia’s role within the G20, noting that during its 2020 G20 presidency the Kingdom helped launch the Global Initiative to Reduce Land Degradation and the Global Coral Reef Initiative. He also referenced Saudi hosting of the 16th UN Convention to Combat Desertification Conference in Riyadh in 2024, which became the largest conference in that convention’s history and produced the Riyadh Declaration and more than 35 resolutions on sustainable land management, community empowerment, and research innovation.
Around 40 initiatives were announced as part of the Riyadh Agenda, including the Riyadh Global Drought Resilience Partnership, which aims to boost international cooperation against drought.
May Allah guide efforts to protect the earth and bless initiatives that serve communities and future generations.
