Salaam - Thoughts on Mercy, Eternity, and Hope for All
Asalaam mu alaikum, I’ve been thinking a lot about Universalism and Allah’s Infinite Mercy and wanted to share some questions and hopes - maybe others can help me think them through, insha’Allah. I’m a Muslim, but I also lean toward what I’d call a Hopeful Universalist view: because Allah’s Mercy is infinite, the idea of Hell lasting forever feels difficult to reconcile. One thought I have I’ve dubbed the “Law of Expanding Eternality.” It’s a simple intuition: if Allah’s Attributes - including Mercy - encompass all of creation, and the universe keeps expanding, then His Mercy would likewise reach into whatever exists. If creation is continually being filled by Allah’s presence and mercy, why would Hell be excluded from that scope? My second thought is about the nature of eternity. Imagine every human who has lived or will live commits sins and faces consequences. Compared to endless time, all those sins are a tiny fraction. If time truly stretches forever, that finite amount of wrongdoing seems almost negligible next to infinity - so how could such a comparatively minute portion justify everlasting punishment? I’m not trying to be provocative or trap anyone with these questions. I’m genuinely seeking reasoned perspectives and arguments for or against these points, so I can learn and refine my understanding, insha’Allah. JazakAllahu khairan for any insights or discussion.
