Salaam - confusion about bleeding and prayer led us to build something
Salaam everyone, A close friend of mine once taught the fiqh of menses, and before his lesson I was amazed at how detailed and delicate the topic is and how much study is needed to handle tricky cases. About a month ago I heard of a woman who started bleeding and assumed she had to stop praying until it stopped. She thought it was her period, but with a few questions from my Imam friend I realised that was the wrong choice - she should have continued praying. What she had was irregular bleeding (istihadah). My friend asked, “When was her last period?” and I said, “about two weeks ago.” He stopped me and said, “Then that wasn’t her period.” I was surprised - she was bleeding, surely? He explained that in our school a purity period should be at least 15 days, and anything sooner is usually classed as istihadah, meaning she should maintain her religious duties like fasting and salah. It struck me how anxious many women must feel, unsure what bleeding means for their worship. “This needs to be more easily available,” I thought. I get questions from my wife and sisters all the time: “I don’t know if my period is finished,” or “I stopped bleeding yesterday but now I’m spotting.” So I rang my friend and suggested we do something about it. Alhamdulillah, I can code and wanted to build something useful. We decided to create an app - not just a cycle tracker but a holistic wellbeing tool for Muslim women that includes fiqh guidance and practical info. I don’t want this post to feel like an ad, so I’ll hold back on a full promotion. I’d rather start a conversation: how are our sisters currently tracking their cycles, if at all? Are you familiar with the rulings about menses and irregular bleeding, what different types of discharge might mean, and how that affects worship, mood, and your relationship with Allah? If you want to hear more about the app, reply and I’ll gladly share. Otherwise I pray this was helpful and inspires you to learn more about your cycle. (NB: I follow the Hanafi school and this explanation is based on Hanafi fiqh.) Wasalam.
