President Erdogan Visits Baku to Join Azerbaijan’s Victory Day Celebrations
As-salamu alaykum - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived in Baku on Saturday to take part in events marking Azerbaijan’s Victory Day on November 8.
Most of the Karabakh region, which had been under Armenian control for nearly thirty years, was retaken by Azerbaijan during the 44-day conflict in late 2020. The fighting ended with a Russian-mediated agreement and led to steps toward normalising relations with Yerevan.
On November 8, Azerbaijani forces liberated the city of Shusha, and that date was later declared Victory Day by presidential decree. Originally celebrations were planned for November 10 - the day the war ended - but the date was changed to avoid coinciding with the anniversary of the passing of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
President Erdogan was greeted at Heydar Aliyev International Airport by senior Azerbaijani officials, including the First Deputy Prime Minister, the Deputy Foreign Minister, and the Defence Minister. Ambassadors from both countries and several members of the Turkish delegation accompanied him; among them were the foreign minister, national intelligence and communications chiefs, and the defence industries director. A chief presidential adviser on foreign policy and security also joined, highlighting the visit’s importance.
During the visit, Erdogan is set to meet President Ilham Aliyev to talk about bilateral ties, regional security, and economic cooperation. He is also expected to hold talks with Pakistan’s prime minister on shared strategic and global issues.
May Allah grant peace and stability to the region.
