Praise be to Allah - King Salman bin Abdulaziz Royal Reserve: a sanctuary for migratory birds and endangered species
As-salamu alaykum. I came across this hopeful news about the King Salman bin Abdulaziz Royal Reserve and wanted to share it in a simple way. During this year’s migration season, field teams at the reserve observed over 300 great white pelicans at one of five important sites inside the reserve. These sites are on the migration route, so they give birds safe places to rest and feed on their long journeys south.
Because of those stopovers, the reserve has become one of the region’s main natural attractions for large migratory birds. Around 88% of the species recorded there are migratory, and more than 290 species have been seen, including herons, the eastern imperial eagle, and the houbara. The reserve is doing important work - teams are running ecological programs and keeping a close watch on the key migratory spots to help these species survive.
The Saudi Press Agency noted that 26 bird species found in the reserve are listed internationally as endangered. The experts working there are supporting conservation and biodiversity protection so the ecosystem stays balanced, alhamdulillah.
The royal reserve spans about 130,700 sq. km across parts of the Northern Borders region, Al Jouf, Tabuk and Hail. It’s one of the first places in the Kingdom that birds from Asia and Europe reach in the fall, and one of the last stops before they head north again in spring.
May Allah bless the efforts of those protecting His creatures and preserve these precious habitats for generations to come.
