Pope Leo XIV's Upcoming Visit to Turkey and Lebanon: A Call for Peace and Unity
As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. The Vatican has announced that Pope Leo XIV will embark on his first international journey as pontiff this November, visiting Turkey from the 27th to the 30th and Lebanon from the 30th of November to the 2nd of December. This visit aims to highlight the challenges faced by Christian communities in the Middle East and to promote peace throughout the region.
Pope Leo XIV, elected in May as the successor to the late Pope Francis, who had intended to visit these countries but was unable due to health concerns, will commemorate the 1,700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea during his time in Turkey, at the town now known as Iznik. He is also expected to meet with Patriarch Bartholomew, the spiritual leader of the Orthodox Christian community.
This journey symbolizes an important message of interfaith respect and cooperation. As Reverend John Chryssavgis, an adviser to the Patriarch, expressed, it is meaningful that Pope Leo chooses to affirm his Christian identity while embracing the diversity of faiths, encouraging all people-regardless of religion or ethnicity-to live together in understanding and harmony.
The Pope will also visit Lebanon, a nation with a significant Muslim and Christian population, to pray for peace and stability, especially remembering the tragic 2020 Beirut port explosion. This visit comes at a crucial time for Lebanon, with hopes that it will inspire unity among all Lebanese citizens.
May Allah guide all leaders towards justice and peace, and may this visit be a step forward in fostering mutual respect and coexistence among different communities in the region. Ameen.
