Pakistan announces Wheat Policy 2025-26 to protect farmers and food supplies
Assalamu Alaikum - Pakistan’s government has rolled out the Wheat Policy 2025-26, aimed at giving farmers fair returns and keeping strategic reserves steady so our nation's food security is protected, the Prime Minister’s office said on Sunday.
Under the plan, federal and provincial authorities will buy about 6.2 million tons from the 2025-26 wheat crop. Procurement will be at Rs3,500 per maund (around $12) based on international import prices, a move meant to give farmers a fair price while keeping the market competitive.
PM Shehbaz Sharif told provincial and regional reps and stakeholders that the government knows the hardships farmers face and that the policy should help secure food for the people of Pakistan, insha'Allah.
This comes after recent floods in Punjab damaged a big chunk of the country’s wheat stocks, with officials saying around 30% was lost in that breadbasket region.
Last year the US Department of Agriculture ranked Pakistan as the world’s eighth-largest wheat producer, with about 31.4 million tons - roughly 4% of global production. Agriculture makes up about 24% of Pakistan’s GDP, and the USDA’s latest estimate for this year is 28.9 million tons from 9.1 million hectares, down about 8% from last year.
The new policy is being presented as a joint effort between federal and provincial players to bolster the agricultural economy and back farming families. National Food Security Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain will lead a national committee with provincial reps to oversee the rollout and coordination.
The PM’s office also said there will be no restrictions on inter-provincial movement of wheat so supplies can reach all parts of Pakistan.
May Allah make this plan benefit our farmers and keep our country secure. Ameen.
