NU Scholar Reveals Three Signs of Moral Crisis in the Story of Prophet Lot
Tian Apriliana, a teacher at Daarul Haliim Islamic Boarding School in West Bandung Regency, explained that the story of Prophet Lot in the Quran teaches three signs of moral crisis. Those signs are rejection of the truth, normalization of sin, and hostility toward those who invite to goodness.
Rejection of the truth is seen when Prophet Lot's people refused advice and the offer of a lawful path through marriage (QS. Hud: 79). According to Tian, the damage of a people often begins with an unwillingness to accept clear truth, not because of ignorance.
Normalization of sin happens when sins are committed openly and shame is lost, as explained in QS. An-Naml: 54. Imam al-Baidhawi interpreted that they knowingly and blatantly performed vile deeds, reflecting the danger when sin is considered normal.
Hostility toward those who invite to goodness, as mentioned in QS. Al-A'raf: 82, is characterized by mockery and efforts to expel Prophet Lot and the believers. This story serves as a mirror for Muslims to be aware of moral decline in society up to this day.
