MUI Reminds Bahlil to Be Careful When Delivering Rulings on Sacrifice
Deputy Secretary-General of the Central MUI, Dr. Aminuddin Yakub, reminded public officials to be careful when expressing views on religious rulings. This was in response to the opinion of Golkar Party Chairman and Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, who stated that sacrifice is obligatory for every Muslim.
Aminuddin explained that there are two main scholarly opinions on the ruling of sacrifice. The majority of scholars from the Shafi'i, Maliki, and Hanbali schools say it is a highly recommended sunnah, while the Hanafi school considers it obligatory for those who are able. This difference is natural and must be respected.
According to Aminuddin, Bahlil's choice to follow the Hanafi opinion is valid, but he must respect the view of the majority of Indonesian Muslims who follow the Shafi'i school. He emphasized that one opinion should not be forced as the only correct one.
MUI urges that matters of religious rulings be left to religious authorities like MUI or experts. Previously, in his opinion piece in Kompas Daily on May 26, 2026, Bahlil equated sacrifice with zakat fitrah, which is obligatory.
