MUI: It's Haram for Men to Wear Women's Clothes During Independence Day Carnivals
The Fatwa Commission of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) firmly stated that men who wear women's clothes, including in Independence Day carnival celebrations, is considered haram in Islamic law. Vice Secretary of the MUI Fatwa Commission, KH Abdul Muiz Ali, explained that the act of imitating the opposite gender (tasyabbuh) is forbidden based on a sahih hadith narrated by Imam Bukhari.
He advised that the commemoration of Indonesian Independence should be filled with positive activities that reflect gratitude, like strengthening unity and increasing prayers. This prohibition applies without exception, whether in private or public spaces.
KH Abdul Muiz Ali also highlighted the social impacts of this phenomenon in the modern era, which is seen as vulnerable to being exploited to infiltrate agendas that go against religious and social norms.
