MUI Chairman: Corruptors Deserve Death Penalty, Don't Hide Behind Human Rights
Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), Anwar Iskandar, stressed that corruptors who cause huge state losses deserve the death penalty. According to him, corruption has taken away the right to life of many people and triggered poverty and social inequality.
"Since 2005, MUI has issued a ruling that corruptors should be sentenced to death, because they violate the right to life of many people," he said. He gave an example, corruption of trillions of rupiah has indirectly killed many people.
Anwar also criticized those who use human rights issues to reject harsh punishments for corruptors. "They like to hide behind human rights rules. In fact, in Islam, human rights are not absolute if they conflict with human rights themselves," he explained.
He emphasized the principle of maqashid sharia, especially hifzhun nafs (preservation of life), which must be prioritized in eradicating corruption. MUI urges scholars and law enforcers to work together to take firm action against corruptors.
