Mosques Prepared to Tackle Muslims' Social Crisis
The Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs is shifting the orientation of mosque development from worship centers to community empowerment hubs to address social issues like polarization and weakening social bonds. Arsad Hidayat, Director of Islamic Affairs and Sharia Guidance at the Ministry, conveyed this during the Bridging International Imam Conference in South Tangerang on Friday (3/7/2026).
Arsad emphasized mosques as shared homes that must be inclusive, serving everyone regardless of background. Mosque outreach is being directed to strengthen brotherhood, resolve differences through dialogue, and spread peace. Mosque caretakers (takmir) play a key role in this transformation through open leadership and transparent governance.
The Ministry is implementing the Madada program (Empowered, Impactful Mosques) to strengthen mosques' social functions in education, economic empowerment, and the environment. This step aligns with Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar's policy prioritizing empowerment of houses of worship, harmony, and economic self-reliance of the community. Mosques are expected to become public service centers, economic drivers, and bastions of national brotherhood.
