Meeting of Muslim foreign ministers in Türkiye to discuss next steps for Gaza - Salam
Salam - Türkiye will host foreign ministers from Muslim countries on Monday to go over a US-proposed peace plan for Gaza, Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said. He told reporters the Istanbul meeting will “review our progress and discuss what we can do together in the next phase.”
A ministry spokesman said invitations were extended to ministers from Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. These foreign ministers had earlier met the US side on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
Fidan said there is “a glimmer of hope” and stressed several important questions for the meeting: what obstacles stand in the way of implementing the plan, what challenges must be overcome, what next steps should be taken, and how to coordinate with Western partners and support ongoing talks with the United States.
He also accused Israeli leadership of seeking a pretext to break the ceasefire in Gaza and resume large-scale attacks. Türkiye has already deployed an 81-person disaster response team to assist with search and rescue in Gaza, but the team is waiting at the border for Israeli permission to enter, Fidan said.
Turkey’s foreign ministry is “working intensively,” and the Turkish military has been discussing joining an international force to help oversee the ceasefire. Israel’s foreign minister, Gideon Saar, however, said it would be unreasonable to allow Turkish forces into Gaza because of what he called Turkey’s hostile stance toward Israel, and that Israel would not agree to such participation.
