Mamdani begins New York transition, vows a capable and compassionate administration - Assalamu alaikum
Assalamu alaikum. New York Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has named leaders for his transition team and says he will build a “capable and compassionate” administration to turn his campaign promises into policy.
In short remarks on Wednesday, Mamdani said he’s moving from the “poetry” of campaigning to the “prose of governing.” He said he and his team will create a city hall able to deliver on the promises of the campaign and that the administration will be guided by integrity and hard work, matching the effort of the millions of New Yorkers who live there.
Mamdani announced an all-women transition team led by four co-chairs, including former FTC chief Lina Khan, known for her antitrust work.
At 34, the democratic socialist defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa to become New York’s first Muslim mayor. He is due to take office on January 1, 2026.
The race was watched beyond the city, seen as part of a larger contest between progressive Democrats and the party’s centrist wing.
Mamdani campaigned on affordability, promising to expand social programs for struggling families. Proposals include free fares for public buses, rent freezes for subsidised housing, and free childcare. He says funding would require working with state leaders to raise taxes on the highest earners.
His support for Palestinian rights was a prominent part of the campaign. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) announced it will closely track the incoming administration’s policies and personnel. ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt accused Mamdani of hostility toward Israel and urged the mayor-elect to stand unequivocally against antisemitism and protect Jewish residents, a responsibility Mamdani has said he accepts while remaining critical of human rights abuses.
Former President Donald Trump, a long-time New Yorker, weighed heavily on the contest. He attacked Mamdani during the campaign and at one point insulted Jewish voters who might support him. Trump also threatened to withhold federal funds and deploy federal forces to the city if Mamdani won.
In his victory speech, Mamdani pushed back. He said New York could show how to oppose Trump by addressing the conditions that allowed him to rise, like income inequality. He challenged Trump directly, and later signaled he would use the courts if the president acted against the city, saying the legal system must be used rather than accepting presidential assertions as law.
Elsewhere on Tuesday, Democrats scored wins in New Jersey and Virginia governor’s races and picked up other strategic contests, seen as a boost for the party ahead of next year’s midterms. Trump acknowledged the setbacks and called for abolishing the Senate filibuster and restricting mail voting, though many Americans use mail ballots and he has repeatedly claimed without evidence that they cause fraud.
May Allah grant wisdom and justice to those in leadership and protect communities. Peace.
