Magnitude 7.1 Quake Shakes Japan, Tsunami Warning Issued
A magnitude 7.1 earthquake shook Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, on Tuesday (7/28/2026) afternoon local time. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the epicenter was 4 km southeast of Uki, Kumamoto, at a depth of 10 km.
Japan's Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued a tsunami warning for the Ariake Bay coast and the Yatsushiro Sea. The quake was recorded at 4:27 PM local time.
