M 7.7 Earthquake in NTT: 5,434 Residents Displaced, 47 Dead and 1,357 Homes Damaged
A magnitude (M) 7.7 earthquake that struck East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) has had a major impact. A total of 5,434 residents are still displaced, while the death toll has reached 47 people based on data updated as of Sunday (16/8/2026) at 00.00 WIB. The quake, centered in the Nagekeo region, also injured 101 residents.
Acting Head of the BNPB Data, Information, and Disaster Communication Center Berton SP Panjaitan said the highest number of displaced people is in Sikka and Manggarai Regencies. In Sikka Regency, 3,356 residents are displaced, while Manggarai Regency recorded 2,078 evacuees. Basic needs are an urgent problem, such as emergency tents, rice, medicines, blankets, folding beds, mats, clean water, and generators.
BNPB recorded 914 heavily damaged houses, 126 moderately damaged, and 317 lightly damaged. Public facilities were also damaged, at least 93 educational facilities, 36 health facilities, and 38 government offices. After the main quake, 341 aftershocks were recorded, adding to residents' worries.
The NTT Provincial Government is processing the determination of a 14-day emergency response status. A field hospital has been set up and is operating in Reok District, Manggarai Regency. The Larantuka–Maumere land route is reconnected, but the Ende–Nagekeo route is still cut off due to the quake's impact.
